National Diabetes Awareness Month- November 2023

November was National Diabetes Awareness Month. The Type 2 Diabetes Workgroup particiapted in numerous activities to spread awareness about this chronic disease.

  • Public Displays--month-long display at Frederick County Public Library—Brunswick Branch. This Diabetes Awareness display included books about Diabetes, educational flyers about Diabetes risks and prevention programs, and healthy recipe cards for community members to take.

  • Weekly Newsletter--Each week in November, we shared links to diabetes related informational websites: o Week 1—Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) o Week 2—World Diabetes Day November 14th o Week 3—My Plate nutrition and healthy eating o Week 4—Physical Activity Information

  • Community Events—volunteers from the Diabetes Workgroup attended events where they shared educational materials, conducted prediabetes risk assessments, and informed participants about available resources such as the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT).

    • 11/2 Diabetes Roundtable Event sponsored by the Frederick Health Bridges Lay Health Educator Program

    • 11/3 Seventh Day Adventist Church Annual Community Check Up

    • 11/11 Hopehill United Methodist Church Health Fair

    • 11/11 Lung Cancer Screening Day Event at Frederick Health

    • 11/21 Frederick Annual Turkey Distribution (vendors canceled)
